Martha's Dare inspiring you to achieve your dreams

Found: Kick Ass Dream Job

Dare: I dare you to find your kick ass dream job !

What do you want to do when you grow up ? A question that is relevant whether your 17 or 32. Maybe you don’t have a clue what you want to be ? Or maybe you know that you definitely DON’T want to be doing what you are doing today. Instead of asking yourself what you want to be when you grow up, instead ask yourself “how do I find a job that let’s me do what I love to do every day”.

Very often we limit our search for our dream job to mainstream jobs such as teachers, lawyers, doctors, actor etc, instead of exploring the plethora of kick ass jobs out there. Here is one approach you can take to explore the diverse world of careers and start your search for your dream job.

The first step is to go to your list of things that you love to do that you created when you got to know yourself fiercely. What do you love to do ?

The second step is to scour the job landscape to find a job that lets you do the things you love to do everyday. How do you do this ?? Make a list people you know but have no idea what they do every day. This can be anyone: your Mom, Aunt, soccer coach, friend, Dad’s golfing buddy, or volunteer at the community centre where you swim. Ask them if they would spend 30 minutes with you to answer some questions about what they do for a living to aid you in your quest for your dream job. Most people love to talk about themselves and will be more than eager to tell you about what they do.

Here are some questions to ask them:
Tell me about what you do for a living.
What does a typical day look like ?
What do you love about your job ?
What do you hate about your job ?
What kind of lifestyle does your job enable (this is a polite way of asking whether they make good money, if they make it home for dinner with their family, and more)
I love to do you get to do that in your job ?

I encourage you to write down their answers and make yourself a list of different jobs you find out about. Most importantly, as you hear about element of their work that you think are kick ass, put a star next to them. Your list of star’d activities make up your dream job ! There may be some jobs that when you hear the title you may instantly think “NO WAY” i would never want to do that. Try not to judge the job by it’s title, you may be surprised that some of these not so cool title’d jobs end up having some very interesting parts. If during one of these interviews you find yourself nodding perfusely and think that their job in fact sounds AMAZING, take a leap – ask them if you can spend a day shadowing them at work.

Martha’s Outcome: When I graduated from Engineering I was unsure about what I wanted to do. I had always wanted to be a doctor or work with the medical profession but now I was not so sure. What i did Know is what I loved to do. I loved to help people, lead teams, and solve problems. So I started calling old friends and asking them my list of questions. When my friend Keith would not stop talking about how much he loved his job doing technical support (to which I rolled my eyes…tech support really!?) he told me how his days were filled solving problems, helping people, learning new things, and working for a company where flip flops were appropriate attire. And here is the cherry on the top, he got to live in California! The adventure of living in a new country (the US), while doing the things I loved to do every day made being in Technical Support not so bad. In fact, I got the chance to interview for the job, got it, moved to California and started doing the things I love to do everyday AND getting paid for it !!

What will it take for you to find your kick ass dream job ?
