A Monk, a Ferrari and some Special Sauce

Over the last week while on vacation, “The Monk who Sold his Ferrari” had me missing my keyboard because I could not wait to tell you all about it. Robin Sharma’s book tells a story of a man who went from high powered lawyer to become a monk (under the guidance of the Sages of the Sivana) and how his journey enabled him to feel alive, be more energetic, healthy, young, and live his purpose. As I read through the pages I was inspired by his eloquent words that captured many of the principles I live by today. These principles make up my “secret sauce” and enable me to be the enthusiastic, happy, healthy, ever growing, energetic, inspiring person that I am today. So, in the words of Robin Sharma, here are what I believe are some elements of my “secret sauce” that I hope will inspire you to live the life you love.

Reflect on your purpose and make incremental improvements daily !
“The Sages of Sivana all took time daily to silently contemplate not only where they were, but where they were going. They took the time to reflect on their purpose and how they were living their lives, every day. Most importantly, they thought deeply and genuinely about how they would improve the next day. Daily incremental improvements produce lasting results, which, in turn, lead to positive change.”

DARE: What can you do tomorrow that will improve yourself ?

Write down your goals and take time to ponder the meaning of your life.
“You will never be able to hit a target that you cannot see. People spend their whole lives dreaming of being happier, living with more vitality and having an abundance of passion. Yet they do not see the importance of taking even ten minutes a month to write down their goal and think deeply about the meaning of their lives, their Dharma. Goal setting will make your life magnificent. Your world will become richer, more delightful and more magical. ”

DARE: Why not take 5 minutes to think about your purpose, what do you want to accomplish in this lifetime ? Try doing this for 5 minutes a day this week – what clarity do you get ?

Approach each day with exuberance and enthusiasm.
“Have fun while you are advancing along the path of your goals and purpose. Never forget the importance of living with unbridled exhilaration. ”

DARE: Enthusiasm is contagious. Be ready to see more smiles, have people drawn to you, and inspired by your attitude.

Take risks – do the things you fear or have convinced yourself that you cannot do. You can do it.

” Practice the art of kaizan by pushing yourself daily. Work hard to improve your mind and body. Nourish your spirit. Do the things you fear. Start to live with unbridled energy and limitless enthusiasm. Watch the sun rise. Dance in a rain shower. Be the person you dream of being. Do the things you have always wanted to do but didn’t because you tricked yourself into believing that you were too young, too old, too rich or too poor. Prepare to live a soaring, fully alive life. In the East they say that luck favours the prepared mind. I believe that life favours the prepared mind. ”

DARE: Have you convinced yourself that you cannot do something because of your age? your experience ? your title ? Turn around that fear by telling yourself you can do it. Remove the barrier you are putting up, and go for it. This takes courage.

Thank you Robin Sharma for such an inspirational fable, and for words of wisdom that will enable me and YOU to live the lives we love.
